Gut bacteria break down Guangdong Finger Citron sugars to help improve type 2 diabetes through a cell signaling pathway

Updated

Abstract

Degradation products of a water-soluble polysaccharide from finger citron significantly improved multiple metabolic parameters in mice with type 2 diabetes after 8 hours of fermentation.

  • DFPG-8 reduced body weight loss, excessive thirst, increased hunger, high fasting blood glucose, and impaired oral glucose tolerance in T2DM mice.
  • The treatment improved lipid metabolism and decreased pancreatic islet injury.
  • Mechanistically, DFPG-8 activated specific signaling pathways associated with cAMP, enhancing important protein and gene expressions related to glucose metabolism.
  • It restored GLP-1 receptor expression in the hypothalamus, which may help regulate appetite and energy balance.
  • These findings suggest that DFPG-8 could improve glycemic control and metabolic health in T2DM.
