A water-soluble fiber from finger citron improves diabetes in mice by affecting gut bacteria and hormone signaling

Updated

Abstract

FCP-2-1 significantly alleviated diabetic symptoms in diabetic mice.

  • FCP-2-1 restored the balance of gut microbiota in high-fat diet and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.
  • The content of short-chain fatty acids, specifically acetic acid and propionic acid, increased with FCP-2-1 treatment.
  • FCP-2-1 promoted the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is a potential therapeutic target for diabetes.
  • Both FCP-2-1 and propionic acid stimulated GLP-1 secretion in specific human intestinal cells.
  • The antidiabetic effect of FCP-2-1 may be associated with the gut microbiota-GLP-1 pathway.
