Reducing artery-damaging trimethylamine N-oxide by changing how gut microbes break down L-carnitine

Updated

Abstract

Treatment with meldonium reduced urinary excretion of TMAO by 3.6 times compared to L-carnitine alone.

  • Meldonium significantly decreased the production of TMA and TMAO from L-carnitine by intestinal bacteria.
  • The combination of meldonium and L-carnitine led to higher levels of gamma-butyrobetaine in blood plasma and intestinal samples.
  • Meldonium did not affect the growth of intestinal bacteria or their uptake of L-carnitine.
  • TMA production by the bacteria K. pneumoniae was notably reduced with meldonium treatment.
