Stable and temporary differences in morning and evening preferences in winter depression

Updated

Abstract

Female patients with winter depression (n = 54) showed no significant differences in morningness after treatment compared to controls (n = 32).

  • Depressed patients and controls reported differences in morningness but not in eveningness.
  • After one week of bright light treatment, the state-like morningness differences for patients were no longer significant.
  • In summer, the trait-like morningness preference persisted in patients, indicating a shift toward eveningness.
  • The normalization of state-like morningness is associated with the reduction of depressive symptoms.
