PDF receptor levels show direct links between internal clocks in fruit flies
Updated
Abstract
A approximately 70-kB PDF receptor transgene rescues the entire circadian behavioral phenotype in Drosophila.
- Daily rhythms of behavior in Drosophila are controlled by a network of 150 circadian pacemaking neurons.
- This network is divided into M and E oscillators that normally interact and synchronize.
- The PDF receptor (PDFR) is crucial for signaling in these oscillators, particularly in the small and large lateral neurons (LNvs).
- GAL4-mediated rescue of pdfr phenotypes with a UAS-PDFR transgene does not achieve complete behavioral rescue.
- The PDF receptor transgene is expressed widely among pacemakers and some non-pacemakers.
- PDF signaling appears to involve autocrine feedback from PDF-expressing cells and targets a population of non-neuronal cells at the base of the eye.
