Redox Cycles and Non-Genetic Controls in the Body's Daily Rhythms
Updated
Abstract
Circadian cycles of oxidation and reduction are conserved across all domains of life.
- Circadian rhythms are present in all living organisms, from bacteria to humans.
- Traditionally, circadian rhythms have been explained by transcription-translation feedback loops (TTFLs).
- New findings indicate that circadian rhythms can also occur through redox reactions, independent of transcriptional cycles.
- Non-TTFL mechanisms may operate alongside genetic processes to produce recognizable circadian behaviors.
