Long Fasting Aligned with Sleep Improves Heart and Metabolism Health at Night and Day

Updated

Abstract

Extended overnight fasting improved nighttime dipping of diastolic blood pressure in 39 overweight/obese participants.

  • An individualized fasting approach extended overnight fasting duration by 3 hours before sleep.
  • This intervention enhanced nighttime autonomic function, indicated by lower nighttime heart rate and higher heart rate variability.
  • Participants showed lower nighttime cortisol levels and improved morning oral glucose tolerance after the fasting intervention.
  • The Matsuda Index of insulin sensitivity did not show significant improvement in the fasting group compared to control.
