Tirzepatide compared to GLP-1 drugs and the risk of blood clots in people with obesity

Abstract

Tirzepatide initiation was associated with a significantly lower risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared with GLP-1 receptor agonists in a cohort of 701,374 patients.

  • Tirzepatide was linked to a hazard ratio of 0.90 for VTE incidence, indicating a reduced risk compared to GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Reductions in pulmonary embolism (PE) risk were observed, with a hazard ratio of 0.88 for patients using tirzepatide.
  • All-cause mortality was also lower for patients on tirzepatide, with a hazard ratio of 0.90.
  • No significant difference in the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was found, with a hazard ratio of 0.96.
  • The findings suggest an association between tirzepatide use and lower VTE risk, but causality cannot be established due to the observational nature of the study.
