Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) may increase the risk of residual gastric content during medical procedures.

  • GLP-1 RAs are commonly used for treating type II diabetes and obesity.
  • These medications can lead to an increased risk of regurgitation and aspiration due to residual gastric content.
  • Patients with preexisting conditions such as gastroparesis may be at greater risk when using GLP-1 RAs.
  • Guidelines and recommendations for managing perioperative risks associated with GLP-1 RAs are discussed.
