Heart failure outcomes linked to combined GLP-1 and SGLT2 diabetes drug treatment in real-world patients

Abstract

After matching, 3421 patients were included in each cohort with no significant differences in mortality or major cardiovascular outcomes.

  • Dual therapy with SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists showed no significant differences in all-cause mortality compared to SGLT2 inhibitor monotherapy.
  • There were no significant changes in all-cause hospitalization, acute myocardial infarction, or acute kidney failure between the two treatment groups.
  • Dual therapy was linked to a significant increase in retinopathy and a modest increase in laboratory hypoglycemia and pulmonary edema.
  • Subgroup analyses indicated lower mortality rates with dual therapy in patients aged 18-64 and in women, suggesting potential benefits in these populations.
  • The negative control outcome (appendicitis) did not show significant results, indicating the robustness of the findings.
