Growth of cells linked to the biological clock in the housefly

Updated

Abstract

Three groups of PDF-immunoreactive neurons were identified in the housefly's brain during various developmental stages.

  • PDF neurons in the housefly are similar in number and distribution to those in fruit flies.
  • The housefly has two groups of small (sPDFMe) and large (lPDFMe) PDF-immunoreactive neurons in the optic lobe, and a third group located in the dorsal protocerebrum.
  • sPDFMe neurons can be detected as early as the first hour of larval development, while some appear later.
  • New PDF neurons arise during the pupal stage but mostly do not persist into adulthood.
  • In adult houseflies, only immunoreactivity to CRY-like protein has been observed, showing a daily rhythm in concentration.
