Summary of Research on Early-Onset Psychosis

Updated

Abstract

A total of 30 meta-analyses involving 25,983 participants indicate 60.1% of individuals with early-onset psychosis have a poor prognosis.

  • Individuals with early-onset psychosis experience greater cognitive impairments compared to controls and those with adult/late-onset psychosis.
  • Neuroimaging studies show abnormalities in individuals with early-onset psychosis, while no differences were found in oxidative stress and inflammatory response markers.
  • Clozapine is identified as the most effective antipsychotic for managing overall, positive, and negative symptoms in early-onset psychosis.
  • The discontinuation rates of antipsychotics due to side effects are low or similar to those seen with placebo.
  • Further research is necessary to explore the effectiveness of psychological interventions and additional prognostic factors for early-onset psychosis.
