Health outcomes linked to GLP-1 receptor drugs in non-diabetic patients with long-term pancreatitis

Updated

Abstract

In a matched cohort study, exposure to GLP-1 receptor agonists was associated with lower rates of recurrent acute pancreatitis (2.4% vs. 10.8%) in patients with chronic pancreatitis.

  • Recurrent acute pancreatitis occurred in 2.4% of patients exposed to GLP-1 receptor agonists compared to 10.8% in those not exposed.
  • Pancreatic cancer rates were 0.7% in the exposed group versus 3.0% in the comparator group.
  • All-cause mortality was observed at 1.5% for patients receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists, compared to 11.1% for those without exposure.
  • Vitamin D deficiency was noted with a higher hazard in the GLP-1 receptor agonist group, although the risk comparison was not statistically significant.
  • The findings are preliminary and suggest further investigation is needed to confirm these associations.
