Changes in gut bacteria and tryptophan processing in the last part of the small intestine linked to mental health in Crohn's disease patients

Abstract

CD patients with showed a significant reduction in microbial diversity within the ileal mucosa.

  • Patients with Crohn's disease and mental disorders had an increased relative abundance of Prevotella.
  • Lower relative abundances of Akkermansia and Faecalibacterium were observed in the same group.
  • Disparities in tryptophan catabolites, including Picolinic acid and Kynurenic acid, were detected in the ileal mucosa of patients with Crohn's disease and mental disorders.
  • A correlation was noted between Picolinic acid levels and anxiety scale scores.
  • Altered microbial composition may interact with changes in in Crohn's disease patients with mental disorders.
